Walls That Were Built Empty
Old-house wall insulation is a big part of our work in Allegan, where over 42% of homes in the city were built before 1940. Those walls were built hollow. On a cold night they feel cold to the touch, and rooms along outside walls never quite warm up.
Dense-pack from inside or out
We drill small holes, from the outside under siding or from the inside through plaster, and blow cellulose into each cavity at high density so it fills completely and does not settle. Then the holes are plugged and patched. Before we start we check for knob-and-tube wiring, fire blocking and signs of moisture.
Balloon framing
Many older houses have studs that run from the sill to the roof with no break. Those cavities act like chimneys. We block them at the top and bottom, often with foam, so dense-pack stays put and warm air stops escaping.
Open walls
During a remodel, open stud bays can be sprayed with foam. Closed-cell reaches Michigan's R-20 wall target in a 2x4 wall where batts cannot.
Exterior options during re-siding
If you are replacing siding on an old Allegan County house, that is the easiest time to insulate walls. With the old siding off, cavities are filled through the sheathing and patched, and the plaster inside is never touched. Continuous foam board can also go on before the new siding to cut heat loss through the studs.
